*If you want a more out of the box approach, create a photoshoot for an object that wouldn't normally be advertised for a fun spin on this assignment. What if you created a stylized photoshoot for a dirty sock . . .
LIGHT PAINTING
*This photo assignment takes a bit more prep work but you can get some really cool images and it is SO FUN!
For this photoshoot, you will use a SLOW shutter speed (we are talking 5 to 10 seconds or more). You will also need a dark place to shoot (room with covered windows and no lights on) and a light source (flashlight, Christmas lights, glow sticks - all work well). You might want a member from you household to help you with this assignment (your helper can paint with the light while you take the photo). However, you can complete this type of photography solo using a timer on your camera and some sort of tripod (similar to the self portrait photoshoot). I have listed resources videos below to help with this assignment.
Use your experience from previous photoshoots to help you compose your compositions. Be sure to show a variety of photo compositions in your contact sheet of 20 images. Choose 5 images to edit in Photoshop. Use your personal voice!
Play around with drawing light around a subject. You can get some very cool effects!
FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY
For this theme explore how your food or the ingredients you use to make a meal, can be transformed into fine art photography. Below are some tips for food photography.
- Turn off your flash! - Flash will make your food look flat and washed out and not as yummy
- Use one type of light source - Different types of light have different temperatures (we learned this when we talked about White Balance). If you want to use natural light, then turn off any artificial lights in the area. The varying color temperatures from the multiple light sources can give you strange color effects on your food.
- Background - Move your food to an ideal location to photograph it. Maybe that is near a window or maybe that is close to a blank wall. Maybe you take a photo from directly above (bird's eye view) so you only see the table top. Maybe you even get a white or black piece of paper or fabric to serve as a backdrop for your photoshoot.
- Portrait mode - If you have portrait mode on your phone it will give you a shallow depth of field which will help you focus on the food subject.
Use your experience from previous photoshoots to help you compose your compositions. Be sure to show a variety of photo compositions in your contact sheet of 20 images. Choose 5 images to edit in Photoshop. Use your personal voice!
REFECTIONS
For this photoshoot, you will use reflective surfaces to create an interesting image. Consider what you are capturing in the reflection and the power of your viewpoint ( try several! ). Use your experience from previous photoshoots to help you. Be sure to show a variety of photo compositions in your contact sheet of 20 images. Choose 5 images to edit in Photoshop. Use your personal voice!
*Look around for new and unusual reflective surfaces for more variety and visual interest!
ABSTRACT
For this photoshoot, you will photograph your subject in a way that doesn't reveal the identity of the subject. Create photos that make viewer question what they are looking at. Consider how you might photograph usual objects in an unusual way. Use your experience from previous photoshoots to help you. Be sure to show a variety of photo compositions in your contact sheet of 20 images. Choose 5 images to edit in Photoshop. Use your personal voice!
*Zooming in to the subject helps to distort the nature of it. When you can't see the whole object, there is more room for mystery.
